Syttende mai – Grunnlovsdagen

Gratulerer med dagen Norge!

Today we celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day (Grunnlovsdagen) all around the country. Cities are full of parades and marching bands, people are dressed in their traditional bunader  and everyone’s having a good time.

The Constitution of Norway was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17 in the year 1814. The constitution declared Norway to be an independent kingdom in an attempt to avoid being ceded to Sweden after Denmark–Norway’s devastating defeat in the Napoleonic Wars.

I took a stroll downtown today to see some of the parades and festivities. Hopefully, the gallery below can transmit some of the atmosphere in town.
